Frank Onyeka Gives Account Of His 2023 AFCON Final Experience
Brentford midfielder, Frank Onyeka has revealed to his club how participating in the 2023 AFCON has helped him as a player.
Recall that Frank Onyeka was one of the most important players in the Super Eagles of Nigeria squad during the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast.
Onyeka played in all seven games the Super Eagles were involved in during the tournament as he helped the team reach the final of the competition.
Unfortunately for the resilient midfielder, the Super Eagles lost 2-1 in the final against the hosts, Ivory Coast on February 11.
Just like most other players who participated in the final of the tournament, Frank Onyeka was given a hero’s welcome at Brentford.
In an interview with the club’s official website, the 26-year-old Nigeria international expressed his excitement that he was able to feature in the tournament and returned to his club without an injury.
“Going back to Africa, helping my team, coming back fit, it’s been really good. I feel really fit,” Frank Onyeka said.
“It was hard, but it was also good, especially defending and on counter-attacks. We came here believing we could do it again, so to lose 1-0 is sad, but it was a good performance.
“It’s hard because they move the ball really quickly, so we needed to adjust as quickly as possible. We did that pretty well in the first half and the second half; defensively we did really well.”
Super Eagles and Chippa United goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali, has been dealt a devastating blow, losing his mother barely two months after the passing of his father.
Nwabali shared the heartbreaking news on X on New Year’s day, writing, “Rip mom, worst year of my life already” accompanied by tears and heartbreak emojis.
This emotional post came just hours after he shared a 2024 recap video, expressing optimism for the new year.
“2024 was a good year, we’re doubling everything in 2025. Thank you Chippa United FC. Thank you Super Eagles. Thanks to all my fans. Let’s do more!” he had written earlier.
Nwabali’s father died in November, just hours after the goalkeeper helped the Super Eagles secure a crucial point in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Benin Republic.
The goalkeeper’s bravery on the field was evident as he manned the goalpost despite his personal loss.
His teammates, fans, and well-wishers rallied around him, offering condolences and support.
With the loss of both parents, Nwabali joins the likes of Victor Osimhen, who has also experienced the pain of losing both parents.

The 25-year-old addressed serious allegations about an alleged rape incident in Stockholm but captured attention with his reflections on love and relationships.
When asked about expressing love, the Les Bleus forward shared: “Yes, to my mother, my father, my little brother. I try to give them this affection every day.”
On romantic love, Mbappé revealed to Le Parisien: “Yes, in the past, I have already been in love and I hope that I will be again. But currently, no.”
