Cameroonian goalkeeper, Andre Onana, granted a golden opportunity to play for national team again

Manchester United goalkeeper, Andre Onana, has returned from his international exile as he has been recalled back to the Cameroon national team.

He will be a part of the Cameroonian squad that will execute the final African Cup of Nations qualifying match in September.

Onana’s return to the squad is coming after his country’s Football Federation suspended him from the team during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. He has been out of the team for over nine months.

Following the suspension for “disciplinary reasons”, which are likely related to an argument with Cameroon coach Rigobert Song, Onana declared his retirement from international football.

In what would be a U-turn, the former Ajax player could line up against Burundi in a winner-takes-all Group C qualifier on September 12, ahead of next year’s African Cup of Nations, which will be hosted by Ivory Coast from January to February 2024.

Namibia topped the qualifying group by one point but completed their matches after Group C was reduced to three teams following Kenya’s expulsion, with two teams to advance.

Cameroon hold second spot on goal difference from Burundi who they will host in the deciding match.

Cameroon will bank on Andre Onana to secure the needed three points and a ticket to the forthcoming AFCON.

The 27-year-old Cameroonian goalkeeper joined Manchester United from Inter Milan in July, replacing David De Gea, who departed the club after 12 years as the Number 1 goalkeeper at Old Trafford.
